Universal Orlando Resort has lifted the saloon doors and given fans a rare peek behind the scenes of one of this year’s most anticipated original haunted houses — Hatchet & Chains: Demon Bounty Hunters. Part Western showdown, part supernatural nightmare, this house promises a wild ride through a lawless frontier crawling with body-snatching demons.
From B-Movie Cameo to Full Feature
Fans of Slaughter Sinema 2 will recognize the gritty duo of Hatchet and Chains. Hatchet — an undead demon with a stoic streak — and Chains — a gruff bounty hunter with a knack for understanding demons — first appeared as part of that house’s horror anthology. Their chemistry was so strong, they’ve now earned a haunted house all their own.
Senior Show Director Charles Gray explains their backstory: Chains once saved Hatchet’s life, and since then, they’ve been partners in hunting down supernatural threats. “In my head, they’re episodic,” Gray says. “Every week there’s gonna be a new adventure.”
This adventure starts when an embittered old woman summons a horde of molten lava demons from the “Hell’s Well” to wreak havoc on her small cowtown. These aren’t your average spiritual possessions — these demons physically invade their victims, leaving them grotesquely transformed. Over time, their stolen flesh rots away, patched together with crude metal clamps.
Designing a Frontier of Fear
Scenic Designer Dylan Kollath and Art Supervisor Claudia Guerra bring the demon-plagued frontier to life with painstaking detail. Guests will begin in the town depot, where Hatchet and Chains are preparing for a showdown. From there, the path winds through the Horse-Toothed Saloon, the fellowship hall, the undertaker’s, and a chilling cemetery.
Along the way, subtle storytelling elements reward careful observers: blood trails that lead to hidden bodies, hints of rampaging demons through deep wall scratches and molten fissures, and even a subplot involving two mysterious townsfolk. “For the normal fan, they might not even notice it,” Gray says, “but on the Unmasking the Horror Tour, you’ll see the full picture.”
Big Effects and Bigger Surprises
This house isn’t all subtlety — it’s also packed with jaw-dropping moments. One scene features a train car appearing to speed past guests, a visual effect that the creative team is particularly proud of. And, true to Horror Nights tradition, there’s a big finale twist they’re keeping under wraps.
From intricate puppetry to UV ghostly lighting, Hatchet & Chains: Demon Bounty Hunters is loaded with set pieces and scares that blend horror cinema with Western grit. It’s an HHN original that feels both fresh and like a cult classic in the making.
So when you saddle up for this year’s Halloween Horror Nights, keep your eyes sharp, your nerves steady, and your ears open for the sound of chains rattling in the distance. Hatchet and Chains might just be the only thing standing between you and a demon’s molten wrath.
