Resident Alien | S1:E3 Recap – Secrets

Harry juggles murder cover-ups, suspicious sheriffs, and his ongoing feud with Max

By Episode 3, Resident Alien is hitting its stride, balancing out the dark comedy with increasingly hilarious predicaments for Harry. This time, the story zeroes in on two major threads: Harry’s desperate attempt to cover up the murder of the real Dr. Vanderspeigle, and his constant battle of wits with young Max.

The episode begins with the sheriff and deputy investigating the mysterious death of Sam Hodges, the town’s original doctor. While the sheriff’s suspicions are spread all over the place, Harry starts panicking over the possibility that someone might discover the truth—that he killed the real Harry after crash-landing on Earth. His bizarre efforts to appear innocent are some of the funniest sequences of the show so far. Watching an alien try to navigate basic human interactions is already entertaining, but add in the layer of a murder cover-up, and it becomes next-level comedy.

Harry’s awkward cover-up takes a truly outrageous turn when the sheriff asks for DNA samples to rule out suspects. To avoid incriminating himself, Harry comes up with an insane plan: he convinces one of his patients to let him perform a circumcision on their baby, and then he hands over the removed foreskin as “his” DNA sample. It’s grotesque, absurd, and somehow hilarious—exactly the kind of twisted humor that makes this show so unique.

Meanwhile, Max continues to be the only person who can see through Harry’s disguise, and the alien doctor just cannot shake this pint-sized adversary. The back-and-forth between them escalates as Harry starts plotting ways to get rid of Max by disguising it as an “accident.” It’s ridiculous and darkly funny that an alien posing as a doctor is spending so much energy scheming about how to eliminate an elementary school kid who keeps glaring at him. Their feud gives the show some of its most side-splitting moments, and it’s quickly becoming the heartbeat of the early season.

On the softer side of the episode, Harry’s connection with Asta deepens. She opens up more about her own life, and Harry’s reactions suggest that his alien instincts are being tested by genuine feelings of empathy. Even though he keeps insisting (to himself and us) that he’s only here to finish his mission and destroy humanity, the cracks in his resolve are starting to widen.

By the end of “Secrets,” Harry has bought himself some temporary breathing room from the sheriff’s investigation, but his web of lies is growing bigger—and his rivalry with Max is becoming more personal and more hilarious. He’s an alien caught between his deadly mission and the messy, complicated world of humans, and it’s a blast to watch.

Personal Reaction

This episode had me laughing out loud, especially at the sheer ridiculousness of Harry’s schemes. I find it hilarious that he keeps plotting ways to eliminate Max by making it look like an “accident,” even though Max is just a kid. It’s dark humor done perfectly—completely over the top but never crossing the line where it feels too cruel. Their rivalry is easily one of my favorite parts of the show, and I can’t wait to see what happens next between them.

What blew my mind in this episode was Harry’s attempt to cover up the murder of the real Dr. Vanderspeigle. The way he tried to prove his innocence by using a baby’s circumcision skin as his DNA sample for the sheriff is both insane and hilarious. I was shaking my head but laughing at the same time—it’s just such a wild, creative twist. Alan Tudyk sells every second of it.

With each episode, I’m realizing that Resident Alien is more than just a quirky sci-fi comedy—it’s a brilliant mix of outrageous plotting, sharp humor, and surprisingly heartfelt moments. This episode really hooked me, and now I’m even more eager to see how Harry keeps digging himself deeper while trying to maintain his alien mission.
