Sinister Schemes deepens the chase, raises the stakes, and puts Devon at the center of Maul’s plan

Coming off the strong premiere, Episode 2 of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord picks up immediately where things left off—and doesn’t slow down. “Sinister Schemes” feels a bit shorter, but it packs in a lot of movement, character tension, and some really interesting developments that kept me locked in.

Going into this series with only a basic understanding of Darth Maul, I’m still discovering a lot as I go—and honestly, that’s part of the fun. One character who really stood out to me this time around is Eeko-Dio Daki. After seeing more of him here, I looked him up and realized he’s one of the Jedi who survived Order 66 alongside his Padawan, Devon Izara. That immediately adds more weight to everything he does in this episode.

Picking Up the Escape

The episode jumps right back into the action with Maul and the Shadow Collective escaping the police station, now with two prisoners in tow: crime boss Looti Vario and Padawan Devon Izara.

What follows is a long, fast-paced chase sequence that takes up a good chunk of the episode—and it’s a fun one. It leads into a face-off between Maul and Eeko-Dio Daki, which is easily one of the highlights.

But what really stood out isn’t just the fight—it’s the choice Eeko makes.

When Maul brings down an elevated walkway, putting civilians in danger, Eeko immediately shifts focus from the fight to saving lives. It’s such a strong Jedi moment and really defines who he is. Even without knowing his full backstory, you can tell he’s the real deal.

Maul’s Control and Manipulation

Back at the Shadow Collective hideout, things slow down just enough to dig into character dynamics.

Maul now has both Devon and Vario imprisoned, and it becomes clear pretty quickly that he has different plans for each of them. Vario is there for information—specifically about the Pyke Syndicate—while Devon is something else entirely.

Maul sees potential in her.

He starts planting ideas, tempting her with power and knowledge beyond what the Jedi would allow. It’s subtle at first, but there’s a clear push to get inside her head. Devon resists, asking to be freed, and Maul’s response is interesting—he tells her she’s free to leave whenever she wants.

That line alone says a lot. This isn’t about physical control. It’s psychological.

A Glimpse Into the Underworld

On the other side of the story, we spend more time with detective Brander Lawson as he digs deeper into the criminal world.

This part continues that police-procedural feel introduced in Episode 1, and it’s growing on me more and more. Lawson tracks down a contact in a casino, giving us more insight into how Maul’s organization fell apart after the rise of the Empire.

It adds context without feeling overwhelming, especially for someone like me who’s still learning this side of the story.

We also get a brief look into Lawson’s personal life, including his relationship with his son. It’s a small moment, but it adds depth and makes him feel more grounded as a character.

The Jedi Connection

Eeko-Dio Daki continues to be one of the most compelling parts of this episode.

Knowing now that he and Devon survived Order 66 together makes their connection feel stronger, even though they’re separated for most of this episode. You can feel that he’s still searching, still watching, and still trying to protect what’s left.

There’s also an interesting thread where he seems to be quietly tracking Lawson, though we don’t fully know why yet. It’s one of those details that feels important and will likely pay off later.

Setting the Bigger Conflict

The final portion of the episode moves things forward in two key ways.

First, Maul uses the information from Vario to successfully strike a Pyke spice shipment. This shows that his larger plan is already in motion, and revenge is clearly a driving force for him.

Second, Devon begins to take a step forward—though not in the way Maul might fully expect.

After repeated prodding from Maul to “see the galaxy for what it truly is,” she manages to use the Force to escape her pod. It’s a small victory, but a significant one. It shows she’s strong, capable, and not easily broken.

At the same time, it raises a big question: is Maul actually helping her grow stronger for his own purposes?

Final Thoughts

“Sinister Schemes” may be a bit shorter, but it does a great job building on the foundation from Episode 1.

The action is still strong, especially in the opening sequence, but what really stands out here is the character work. Maul’s manipulation, Devon’s resistance, and Eeko’s presence all create a compelling dynamic that feels like it’s just getting started.

From my perspective, still going into this with limited knowledge of Maul’s full history, the show continues to do a great job of keeping things accessible while layering in deeper storytelling.

And I’ve got to say—Eeko-Dio Daki really caught my attention this episode. There’s something about his calm, focused approach that stands out, and I’m definitely curious to see where his story goes next.

Overall, this episode keeps the momentum going and sets up even bigger conflicts ahead. It still feels like we’re in the early stages, but that just makes me more excited to see how everything unfolds.
