“E.T. Phone Home” — Celebrating 43 Years of a Sci-Fi Classic That Still Glows Bright

June 11, 1982. That’s the day E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial landed in theaters and into the hearts of millions. For me, it’s extra special—I was born just 10 days before this iconic film made its debut. And even though I was just a newborn when Elliott and E.T. first flew across the moon, the movie quickly became one of my all-time favorites growing up. It’s a story that still hits home, filled with wonder, warmth, and that unmistakable 80s magic.

E.T. is the ultimate family sci-fi film—right behind the Star Wars saga, of course. From the unforgettable bike silhouette against the moon to the clever little nod to Yoda at Halloween, Spielberg’s film packed emotional weight and nerdy joy into every frame. And who could forget the Reese’s Pieces? I still can’t pass by a pack without thinking of that gentle alien and the trail that led him to friendship.

The 80s vibe is what makes it even more personal. Growing up during that era, E.T. reflected the kind of suburban childhood many of us lived—riding bikes until sunset, being curious about everything, and discovering friendship in the most unexpected places. It was a film about heart, and that message has never faded.

E.T.’s Holiday Homecoming — A Tribute That Hit Close to the Heart

One of the most touching moments in recent years was when E.T. returned—not in theaters, but in a special Holiday Tribute short film a few years ago. Universal Pictures released a mini-sequel-style commercial that brought E.T. back to Earth during the holidays, where he reunited with an adult Elliott, now with a family of his own.

This short tribute was more than just a nostalgia play—it was emotional, magical, and beautifully crafted. Seeing E.T. once again explore a new world (this time filled with modern tech and family traditions) felt like a warm hug for longtime fans. It was a perfect blend of past and present, and it reminded us all of what made the original movie so beloved: the power of connection.

As someone who grew up with the film and now watches it with my own kids, that holiday tribute truly hit home. It was a gift to fans across generations.

Universal Orlando’s E.T. Adventure: A Living Tribute

Here’s what makes this anniversary even sweeter: E.T. lives on—not just in our hearts or on our shelves—but as a theme park ride. Universal Orlando Resort still operates E.T. Adventure, the last remaining opening-day attraction at the park. Despite all the new lands and upgrades over the years, this charming ride remains untouched, separate even from the recently opened DreamWorks Land.

The attraction is currently down for refurbishment, but it’s scheduled to reopen soon—and thank goodness! There are even rumors that a contract between Universal and Spielberg guarantees the ride’s continued existence, a quiet promise that this story will never be forgotten. It’s hands-down one of my favorite rides in any park. And let’s be honest—there’s nothing like walking into that forest queue and smelling the earthy scent of pine. It’s immersive, nostalgic, and pure movie magic.

Here’s to Many More Years of E.T.

From the silver screen to the ride through the stars, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial has proven itself to be more than just a film—it’s a cultural touchstone. It reminds us of friendship, adventure, and the childlike wonder we all carry inside. Forty-three years later, it’s still phoning home to our hearts.

Happy Anniversary, E.T.—you’ll always be right here.
