A Haunting Goodbye: Six Flags America Cancels Fright Fest Ahead of Final Season

As Six Flags America in Prince George’s County, Maryland, heads into its final season, the park has made a surprising decision that underscores the end of an era: Fright Fest, the park’s signature Halloween event, has been officially canceled. The move comes as the theme park prepares for permanent closure this November.

A spokesperson for Six Flags America confirmed on Wednesday that the cancellation is part of a broader effort to reframe the park’s farewell season around family-friendly experiences. While Fright Fest — known for its haunted houses, scare zones, and spine-chilling nighttime thrills — will not return, the Kids Boo Fest will go on as scheduled.

Running weekends from September 14 through November 2, the daytime Halloween event offers a more cheerful take on spooky season, with trick-or-treat trails, themed entertainment, and activities tailored for younger guests. This family-focused approach reflects the park’s final push to offer lighter, inclusive experiences for its local community.

“We understand that change can sometimes be challenging, and we deeply appreciate the support and enthusiasm of our guests,” a Six Flags spokesperson said. “We’ve made the strategic decision to focus on daytime activities that the whole family can enjoy.”

Season pass holders have been notified of the changes and offered complimentary admission to Fright Fest at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey, which remains the nearest option for those seeking a scarier Halloween fix.

Six Flags announced earlier this year that the Bowie-based park and its adjacent water park, Hurricane Harbor, would close permanently by the end of 2025’s operating season. Company officials cited that the 500-acre property no longer fits their long-term strategic goals, though future plans for the land remain uncertain.

As the park winds down operations, Kids Boo Fest stands as a final farewell to generations of families who made memories at the Maryland park — a last chance for guests to enjoy a bit of Halloween magic before the gates close for good.
