Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures are bringing one of the world’s most beloved gaming franchises to the streaming world. A Minecraft Movie, the first-ever live-action adaptation of the best-selling video game, will make its global streaming debut exclusively on Max this Friday, June 20. The film will also air on HBO linear on Saturday, June 21 at 8:00 p.m. ET. But what truly stands out with this release is its inclusive approach: an American Sign Language (ASL) version, performed by Deaf ASL interpreter Sophia Morales, will also be available on Max starting June 20.

As a Deaf viewer, this type of accessibility is more than appreciated—it’s empowering. Whether you’re Deaf or hard of hearing, having options to watch content with ASL interpretation, closed captions, or both ensures we’re not just invited to the party—we’re part of the experience. Max has been gradually building a strong track record of offering these inclusive options, with past titles like Barbie, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and others also releasing with ASL support.

Welcome to the Overworld

The live-action adventure follows four misfit friends—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Jason Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers), and Dawn (Danielle Brooks)—each struggling with challenges in the real world. Their lives take a dramatic turn when they are mysteriously pulled into the Overworld, the blocky realm of Minecraft where survival and creativity go hand-in-hand. To return home, they must conquer the rules of this strange world, teaming up with none other than Steve, played by Jack Black.

Together, the crew must defeat classic Minecraft threats—like Piglins and Zombies—and discover what makes them unique, bold, and capable. The film blends action, comedy, and heartfelt lessons in creativity and resilience, reflecting the very spirit of the Minecraft game.

A Star-Studded, Crafty Creation

Directed by Oscar® nominee Jared Hess (Nacho Libre, Ninety-Five Senses), A Minecraft Movie features an ensemble cast that includes:

  • Jason Momoa as Garrett
  • Jack Black as Steve
  • Emma Myers (Wednesday)
  • Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple)
  • Sebastian Hansen (Just Mercy)
  • Jennifer Coolidge

The screenplay is the work of Chris Bowman & Hubbel Palmer, Neil Widener & Gavin James, and Chris Galletta, with a story developed by Allison Schroeder and others. Behind the scenes, the film was shepherded by an impressive team of producers and executive producers deeply familiar with the Minecraft universe and blockbuster filmmaking.

Why This Matters for Deaf Audiences

Representation and accessibility should never be afterthoughts—and Max is taking meaningful steps to ensure Deaf and hard of hearing viewers are included from day one. Sophia Morales’ ASL performance makes A Minecraft Movie more than just a streaming title—it becomes an invitation for everyone to join in the fun.

Whether you’re a lifelong Minecraft fan or a curious newcomer, A Minecraft Movie promises a fresh, fun, and inclusive cinematic experience. Be sure to stream it this Friday on Max—and if you’re Deaf or hard of hearing, try the ASL version to experience the adventure in a way that speaks your language.

Mark your calendars:
Minecraft hits Max on Friday, June 20.
The ASL version, also on Max, premieres the same day.
The HBO linear premiere is Saturday, June 21 at 8:00 p.m. ET.

Let the crafting—and the inclusivity—begin.
