This is one of those stories where the details really matter, because the timeline tells us just how serious Disney has been about this project from the very beginning. Piston Peak National Park did not quietly appear out of nowhere. It was first revealed in July 2024 at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event during the Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase, and from that moment on, it was clear this would be something much bigger than a simple Cars overlay.
Lightning McQueen and Tow Mater are officially racing into Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort, trading Radiator Springs for rugged terrain and wide-open frontiers.

The D23 2024 Reveal: Cars Race Into Magic Kingdom
At D23 2024, Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro took the stage and confirmed that a new area inspired by Pixar Animation Studios’ Cars would be coming to a reimagined section of Frontierland. With the help of Tow Mater via video call, the announcement immediately set the tone for what this land is meant to represent.
“The American West has always been about keeping your eyes on the horizon … believing in yourself, carving your own path, and striving toward success,” Josh told the crowd. He went on to connect that idea to the stories already told in Magic Kingdom, from miners in the mountains to bears from the country to a princess from the bayou, and yes, even a racecar from the big city.
This framing mattered. Disney was clearly positioning Cars not as a modern outlier, but as a continuation of Magic Kingdom’s long-running frontier narrative.
Two New Cars Attractions, Two Very Different Experiences
Right from the start, Disney confirmed that this would not be a one-ride addition. Guests heading west into this new frontier will experience two Cars-themed attractions.
The headline attraction is a thrilling off-road rally race through the mountains. Guests will race across wild terrain, climbing mountain trails, dodging geysers, and splashing through mudholes, which just so happens to be one of Mater’s favorite activities. This experience pushes Cars into a completely new environment, far removed from paved roads and neon signs.
The second attraction is designed with smaller racers in mind. While details remain lighter, Disney has confirmed it will be fun for the whole family, ensuring this area appeals to a wide range of guests and not just thrill seekers.
Disney also made it clear that work on this new Frontierland space would begin in early 2025, reinforcing that everything shown was already in active development. As Josh D’Amaro emphasized that night, plans were drawn, dirt was moving, and Imagineers were already hard at work around the world.
March 2025: The Second Official Update

The next major update arrived in March 2025, reinforcing the scope and ambition of the project. Once again, Disney stressed that Lightning McQueen, Mater, and the rest of the Cars crew were leaving Radiator Springs behind and heading into the frontier to put their wheels to the test.
This update helped clarify that this new land was not just Cars dropped into Frontierland, but a carefully designed environment inspired by the American West, national parks, and off-road adventure. The storytelling focus shifted even more clearly toward nature, exploration, and pushing beyond familiar limits.
SXSW and the Future of World-Building
At The Future of World-Building at Disney panel during SXSW, Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter and Imagineer Michael Hundgen offered one of the most exciting peeks yet behind the curtain. They revealed that Imagineers are developing an entirely new type of ride vehicle for the main Cars attraction.
“Our primary goal is creating an emotional experience for our guests,” Hundgen explained. “For this Cars attraction, we need to invent a new type of ride vehicle. No one builds these in a factory because it has to do so much more than just carrying you from one place to another.”
To get that feeling right, the team traveled to the Arizona desert to experience real off-road driving firsthand. Racing over rocky terrain, climbing mountain peaks, and maneuvering around geysers are all new challenges for Lightning McQueen and Mater, and Imagineers wanted to understand how those sensations could translate into a Cars-style experience.
From there, the team partnered with a motocross company to build a real dirt track. Using a customized production vehicle equipped with sensors, they collected data on how a vehicle responds to different terrain. That information is now shaping how the final ride vehicles will move, race, and feel once guests climb aboard.
New Race Car Personalities
Of course, this is Pixar, so it is not just about mechanics and motion. Pete Docter shared early concept sketches teasing that Imagineers and Pixar artists are creating brand-new race car personalities for the attraction. Each ride vehicle will have its own name and number, just like a real race car, adding character and personality to the experience itself.
This detail alone hints that guests are not just passengers. They are part of the race.
Where Piston Peak National Park Fits in Magic Kingdom
The official name, Piston Peak National Park, was revealed in June 2025, tying all of these ideas together into a single identity. Based on current speculation maps, including a clear layout shared by WDWInfo, this area is expected to rise where Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat once sat.

This location places Piston Peak as the southern anchor of a massive expansion zone. With the Villains-themed land planned for the most northern part of the park, this Cars area becomes part of a double add-on that dramatically reshapes the back half of Magic Kingdom.
Looking Ahead
Piston Peak National Park feels like a bold evolution of Magic Kingdom’s storytelling. It honors the park’s frontier roots while pushing into new emotional and technological territory. Saying goodbye to long-standing experiences like Rivers of America is not easy, but this project clearly reflects Walt Disney’s belief in forward momentum and everlasting storytelling.
And if all of this leads to finally meeting Mater in the park, well, I think a lot of us will be more than ready to start our engines.
