A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow Is Coming: Disney Reveals Major Carousel of Progress Update

Magic Kingdom's beloved classic is preparing for its biggest transformation in decades while honoring Walt Disney's original vision of progress and optimism.

For many Disney fans, Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress is more than just an attraction. It’s a time capsule, a celebration of innovation, and one of the few remaining experiences that carries Walt Disney’s personal touch.

Disney recently pulled back the curtain on the next evolution of this Magic Kingdom classic, and I’ll admit something: I completely missed the clues.

When Disney first announced that Walt Disney himself would soon appear inside Carousel of Progress through Audio-Animatronics technology, I thought it was simply a new introduction being added to the attraction. What I didn’t realize was that Disney was already laying the groundwork for a much larger transformation.

As it turns out, change has always been part of the Carousel of Progress story.

A History Built on Progress

The roots of Carousel of Progress stretch back to Walt Disney’s unrealized plans for Disneyland expansion in the 1950s. What began as a concept called Harnessing the Lightning eventually evolved into the attraction that debuted at the 1964-1965 New York World’s Fair.

The attraction introduced guests to a rotating theater experience unlike anything audiences had seen before. Combined with the unforgettable Sherman Brothers anthem, “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow,” the show became an instant success.

After its run at the World’s Fair, Carousel of Progress moved to Disneyland before eventually finding its permanent home at Magic Kingdom in 1975.

What surprised me most while learning about this announcement is just how many times Disney has already updated the attraction over the years. While many fans view it as a preserved piece of Disney history, the reality is that Carousel of Progress has continually evolved through new scripts, voice actors, scene updates, and even different theme songs.

In many ways, updating the attraction isn’t breaking tradition—it’s continuing it.

Walt Disney Is Coming Home

Perhaps the most significant addition will be the arrival of a Walt Disney Audio-Animatronic figure.

Guests will encounter Walt in a brand-new opening scene inspired by the 1964 television special Disneyland Goes to the World’s Fair. Disney Imagineers are recreating props seen in the original program, including references to attractions and projects that helped define Walt’s vision for the future.

For longtime Disney fans, this could become one of the most emotional moments in Magic Kingdom.

The idea of seeing Walt personally introduce the attraction he championed more than 60 years ago feels like a fitting tribute to the man whose optimism helped shape Disney Parks.

A New Journey Through Time

The biggest changes will happen inside the attraction itself.

Disney Imagineers are refreshing each act to focus on more recent decades that today’s guests can personally connect with.

Act One: The 1960s

The story begins during the summer of 1969 as the family gathers around the television to witness the Apollo 11 moon landing. It’s a moment that perfectly captures the attraction’s themes of innovation and possibility.

Act Two: The 1980s

The next stop takes guests to Halloween night in 1985. This time, Sarah takes center stage as she explains how emerging household technology is changing everyday life.

Meanwhile, John is busy handing out candy, and Uncle Orville is still struggling to find some peace and quiet.

Act Three: The New Millennium

The family then prepares to celebrate New Year’s Eve 1999 as the world counts down to the year 2000.

The Internet becomes the newest innovation bringing people together, while familiar family moments continue to steal the spotlight. Disney even teased that Grandpa may not make it to midnight.

Act Four: The Possible Future

The attraction’s finale will continue looking ahead, but with a fresh vision inspired by original concept artwork from Disney Legend John Hench.

Guests can expect a futuristic home complete with advanced robotics, space travel, and technologies that still feel just out of reach.

It’s a reminder that while the future may change, the dream of tomorrow never does.

A New Poster for a New Era

Disney also revealed a brand-new attraction poster inspired by the original Disneyland artwork.

It’s a nice visual representation of what Imagineering is trying to accomplish with this project—respecting the attraction’s history while preparing it for future generations.

My Take

I had the opportunity to experience Carousel of Progress during my Magic Kingdom visit last December, and it remains one of those attractions that never loses its charm. While many guests rush toward the newest rides, this theater-in-the-round classic continues telling a uniquely Disney story about family, innovation, and optimism.

You can read more about that visit in my trip report:

Learning about the attraction’s long history gave me a new appreciation for what’s happening now. I always knew Carousel of Progress was important to Walt Disney, but I didn’t realize how often Disney has refreshed the show to keep it relevant to each generation.

Sometimes it’s fascinating to discover what you didn’t know about an attraction you’ve experienced for years. That’s one of the reasons it’s great to have Disney friends and fellow fans around. Someone always notices details or pieces of history that you may have completely missed.

And in this case, Disney was quietly setting the stage for the next chapter of Carousel of Progress long before many of us realized it.

When Will the Changes Happen?

Disney has announced that Carousel of Progress will temporarily close beginning July 6, 2026, to begin work on the extensive refresh.

The attraction is expected to reopen sometime in 2027.

Until then, fans still have time to experience the current version one more time before the next great big, beautiful tomorrow arrives.
