One of my favorite parts about road trips is discovering something completely unexpected.
On our drive back to Florida after a wonderful family vacation in Pigeon Forge, we made our usual stop at the Florida Welcome Center along I-75. While stretching our legs and grabbing some travel information, something immediately caught my eye—a life-sized superhero standing proudly near the entrance.
Captain Citrus.
I’ll be honest… I had absolutely no idea who he was.
Naturally, my curiosity kicked in. I asked one of the welcome center staff members about him, and she smiled as if she’d answered the question many times before. She gave me a quick overview, and that was enough for me to do a little research once I got home. As both a Marvel fan and someone who has called Florida home for more than a decade, I couldn’t believe this character had completely flown under my radar.
Yes, Captain Citrus Is Actually a Marvel Superhero
At first glance, Captain Citrus looks like a mascot created just for Florida tourism. Surprisingly, he’s an official Marvel Comics character.
Captain Citrus was introduced in 2014 through a partnership between Marvel Custom Solutions and the Florida Department of Citrus. The goal was to encourage healthy living while celebrating Florida’s famous citrus industry. Rather than creating a simple advertising mascot, Marvel gave him a legitimate superhero origin story and even placed him alongside Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in a three-issue comic series titled Avengers Assemble Featuring Captain Citrus.
The Origin of Captain Citrus
Captain Citrus’ real name is John Polk, a Florida citrus grower whose life changes after discovering mysterious Solar Pods hidden within his family’s orange grove.
The Solar Pods grant him incredible solar-powered abilities, including enhanced strength, flight, energy projection, protective shields, and the ability to create energy constructs. His mission becomes protecting Florida while using his powers for good, eventually earning the respect of the Avengers.
It’s certainly one of Marvel’s more unique origin stories, but somehow it works.
Is Captain Citrus Part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
Not yet.
Captain Citrus has never appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and there have been no announcements suggesting he’ll make the jump to film or Disney+.
Instead, he remains a Marvel Comics character created specifically for the Florida Department of Citrus. Even so, Marvel treated him like a genuine superhero by giving him professionally illustrated comics, original villains, and adventures that placed him alongside familiar Marvel heroes.
Who knows? With Marvel continuing to explore lesser-known characters, anything is possible someday.
A Hero Built Around Florida
One of the things I found most interesting is that Captain Citrus isn’t another billionaire inventor, soldier, or cosmic traveler.
He’s simply a Florida citrus grower.
His powers are literally fueled by the Sunshine State through the Solar Pods, making him one of the most uniquely Florida-themed superheroes Marvel has ever created. Even his costume reflects Florida’s identity with bright citrus-inspired colors, solar emblems, and plenty of orange and yellow.
It’s a fun concept that feels perfectly at home in the Sunshine State.
One of My Favorite Road Trip Discoveries
I probably would have walked right past Captain Citrus if I hadn’t stopped to ask a simple question.
Instead, a quick conversation with one of the Welcome Center employees introduced me to one of Marvel’s hidden gems that I never knew existed. Sometimes those roadside welcome centers offer more than maps and travel brochures—they can also introduce you to pieces of local culture you might otherwise miss.
As someone who’s lived in Florida for over 10 years, I’m genuinely surprised it took me this long to discover Captain Citrus. It just goes to show that no matter how long you’ve lived here, there’s always something new waiting to be discovered.
And yes… I couldn’t leave without picking up one of the free Captain Citrus stickers before continuing the drive home.
