Resident Alien | S1:E9 Recap – Welcome Aliens

A cave rescue, life-or-death stakes, and Harry’s humanity breaking through

Episode 9, Welcome Aliens, brings a mix of comedy, paranoia, and small-town chaos as the story inches closer to the season finale. With Harry now in possession of his device, you’d think he’d be focused on finishing his mission. Instead, his human entanglements—and his obsession with Max—continue to derail everything in the most entertaining ways.

The centerpiece of the episode is the UFO convention that rolls into town. For Paradise, Colorado, it’s just another quirky local event, but for Harry, it’s a nightmare. The town fills with conspiracy theorists, alien “experts,” and curious tourists who are exactly the type of people Harry doesn’t want sniffing around while he’s trying to keep his secret. Every interaction is hilarious, from Harry mocking the absurd alien theories (without realizing how close some people are to the truth) to his own awkward attempts at fitting in with the crowd.

Meanwhile, Max stays on the offensive. His determination to expose Harry reaches new levels, and Harry’s growing paranoia about this one small kid is played to perfection. Harry once again fantasizes about ways to “accidentally” get rid of Max, and it’s darkly funny how seriously he takes it. The irony is that Max is the only one who actually sees Harry for who he is, while all the adults—including the sheriff and deputy—remain clueless.

The sheriff’s investigation into Dr. Sam’s death takes another step forward in this episode. Suspicion continues to swirl, and Harry has to keep pulling wild tricks to avoid being caught. His past cover-ups and schemes keep coming back around, and you can feel the tension building. Every time the sheriff narrows his eyes at Harry, it feels like the walls are closing in.

On the emotional side, Harry’s bond with Asta deepens further. Their conversations peel back more layers of both characters, with Asta slowly realizing that something is deeply off about Harry. She doesn’t know the full truth yet, but her instincts are strong, and it’s clear her trust in him is shaky at best. The writers keep teasing this slow reveal, and it adds so much suspense.

By the end of Welcome Aliens, Harry is more paranoid than ever. The combination of Max’s persistence, the sheriff’s investigation, and the UFO convention full of alien enthusiasts makes his secret harder to protect. He still has the device, but his mission feels like it’s slipping away.

Personal Reaction

This episode was such a fun lead-in to the finale. The UFO convention was the perfect setting for Harry’s awkwardness, and I laughed so hard at how he mocked the alien “experts.” The irony that he’s actually the real deal standing in the middle of a room full of conspiracy nuts is pure comedy gold.

I still think it’s absolutely hilarious (and insane) that Harry spends so much brainpower plotting Max’s “accidents.” Like—he’s supposed to be focused on wiping out all of humanity, but no, Max is priority number one. It cracks me up every time because the rivalry feels almost cartoonish, yet it’s one of the strongest ongoing jokes of the show.

On the flip side, the sheriff storyline really kept me hooked here. Watching Harry try to dance around the investigation while still maintaining his fake doctor persona is crazy. The fact that he once used a baby circumcision to distract the sheriff with DNA still blows my mind—it’s one of the wildest and funniest ideas I’ve ever seen on TV.

Episode 9 did a great job of mixing comedy, paranoia, and heart, and now I’m fully braced for the Season 1 finale. With Harry’s secrets hanging by a thread and his mission still unfinished, I cannot wait to see how this all explodes in Episode 10.
