Halloween Horror Nights has introduced plenty of unforgettable characters over the years, from Jack the Clown to Dr. Oddfellow. But one character has been capturing the attention of Halloween fans around the world, and he might be one of the strangest yet most lovable monsters Universal has ever created. Meet HamiKuma, the creepy-looking bear with exposed insides, a stitched-up appearance, and a personality that somehow makes him both adorable and terrifying.
Originally introduced at Universal Studios Japan, HamiKuma has become a recognizable part of the Halloween Horror Nights experience. But behind his unusual appearance is a surprisingly tragic story involving jealousy, betrayal, and a horrifying death. Universal Studios Japan brought that story to life through an animated short titled The Origin of HamiKuma, revealing how an innocent circus performer became the undead Halloween character fans know today.
From Circus Performer to Undead Monster
Long before becoming a Halloween Horror Nights icon, HamiKuma was an adorable bear who performed in a traveling circus. His entertaining personality and unusual movements quickly made him a crowd favorite, drawing enormous audiences wherever the circus traveled. Unfortunately, his growing popularity didn’t sit well with the other performers, who became jealous of the attention he was receiving. Some even began questioning whether HamiKuma was a real bear, believing that someone must be hiding inside his costume.
One night, the jealous performers decided to uncover the truth by luring HamiKuma into the circus’s big top tent. Convinced that someone was hiding beneath his furry exterior, they cut open his stomach, only to discover that there was nobody inside. HamiKuma really was a bear, and their terrible mistake had cost him his life. Panicked by what they had done, the performers set the circus tent on fire to destroy the evidence, leaving behind the remains of the once-beloved entertainer.
However, HamiKuma’s story didn’t end there. After entering the afterlife, his damaged body caught the attention of a parasitic demon known as Death Bringer, who saw an opportunity to escape the underworld. The demon crawled inside HamiKuma’s open stomach and used his body to return to the living world, bringing the bear back with eternal life while his original soul remained trapped in the afterlife.
The result was the HamiKuma we recognize today, an undead circus bear with exposed insides, strange creatures lurking within his stomach, and an appearance that perfectly blends horror with cuteness. Despite everything that happened to him, HamiKuma still had the desire to entertain, eventually becoming the star he had always wanted to be. It’s a rather twisted ending considering that jealousy over his popularity was what led to his death in the first place.
Becoming a Halloween Horror Nights Favorite
HamiKuma first appeared at Universal Studios Japan’s Halloween Horror Nights in 2021 as part of the Gothic Killer Cuties scare zone. His unusual appearance quickly caught the attention of guests, especially with his combination of creepy horror and playful personality. In Japan, this style is often described as kowa-kawa, meaning scary-cute, which perfectly captures everything about HamiKuma.
His popularity continued growing, eventually leading to his own entertainment experience, HamiKuma Psycho Circus, in 2022. Over the following years, HamiKuma became a major part of Universal Studios Japan’s Halloween celebrations, appearing in live entertainment, merchandise, and promotional campaigns. By 2025, his popularity had expanded beyond Japan with appearances at Universal Studios Hollywood and merchandise at Universal Orlando Resort. For Halloween Horror Nights 35 in Orlando in 2026, guests even had the opportunity to encounter HamiKuma during a special meet-and-greet experience.

I actually had the opportunity to meet HamiKuma during Halloween Horror Nights 35 at Universal Studios Florida, and it was such a fun experience! Seeing him in person made me appreciate the character even more, especially after learning about his tragic backstory. He’s definitely one of those characters who perfectly captures the spooky yet playful side of Halloween Horror Nights.
What makes HamiKuma interesting is how he fits into the overall Halloween Horror Nights experience. While the event is known for its terrifying haunted houses inspired by popular horror movies, some of its most memorable characters come from Universal’s own imagination. Much like Jack the Clown became synonymous with Halloween Horror Nights in Orlando, HamiKuma has developed his own identity in Japan and is now finding an audience around the world.
As someone who enjoys everything about Halloween Horror Nights, from the haunted houses and scare zones to the fog-filled streets and nighttime atmosphere, I love seeing original characters receive this kind of attention. It’s easy to walk past a character like HamiKuma and simply think he’s another creepy Halloween mascot, but learning the story behind his appearance adds another layer to the experience. That’s part of what makes Halloween Horror Nights so special. There is often much more storytelling behind the scares than guests initially realize.

The Show Must Go On
When you think about it, HamiKuma’s story is both heartbreaking and fascinating. He started as an innocent performer who simply wanted to entertain audiences, only to become the victim of jealousy and betrayal. Yet even death couldn’t keep him away from the spotlight, and now he’s become one of Universal’s most recognizable original Halloween characters.
With HamiKuma continuing to gain popularity beyond Universal Studios Japan, it will be interesting to see what Universal has planned for him in the coming years. Hopefully, we’ll continue seeing him as part of the Halloween Horror Nights experience, whether through character encounters, live entertainment, or perhaps something even bigger.
After all, if there’s one thing we’ve learned about HamiKuma, it’s that the show must go on, even after death.
